Visa free access: Pakistan passport improves global ranking

Date:

Dubai: Pakistan’s passport has made a notable leap in the global rankings, now standing at 100th position according to the latest Henley Passport Index.

This improvement reflects Pakistan’s growing diplomatic efforts and recent international agreements that are gradually enhancing travel freedom for its citizens.

With the improved global ranking, Pakistani passport holders can now travel visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access to 32 countries worldwide, marking a significant rise from previous years. The Henley & Partners’ 2024 report places Pakistan’s passport at 100th globally out of 199 countries, up from 113th in 2021.

Bilateral agreements

Just days ago, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a key agreement allowing holders of diplomatic and official passports from both nations to travel visa-free. This arrangement removes pre-travel visa requirements, strengthening ties between Islamabad and Abu Dhabi and providing a boost to Pakistani diplomatic mobility.

Challenges remain

The Pakistani business community continues to express concerns over limited international mobility. Easier visa access is critical for trade, investment, and global market engagement. During a recent meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged these concerns and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving travel freedom for Pakistani nationals.

International profile

Minister Naqvi highlighted ongoing efforts to raise the international profile of Pakistan and its passport. “We are proud of our green passport, and in the future, it will be a source of even greater pride,” he said, signalling plans to negotiate more visa agreements and strengthen diplomatic ties.

While details on specific initiatives remain limited, the government’s focus includes expanding visa-free travel options and addressing international perceptions of Pakistan.
