Harry Brook to captain England in Australia ODIs

Date:

Harry Brook will lead England for the first time in his career after being named captain for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Brook has been elevated to captaincy after Jos Buttler was ruled out of the five-match series.

Buttler, who wasn’t picked for the T20Is as well, is continuing to recover from the calf injury he had sustained earlier. Buttler’s injury has also opened the doors for Liam Livingstone to return to the ODI set up after being ignored earlier. The dashing allrounder has been rewarded after picking five wickets in the ongoing T20I series so far apart from smashing 87 off just 47 balls in the second T20I.

Buttler, who hasn’t played since the T20 World Cup semifinal against India in late July, will now have to target a return to the squad for their tour of the Caribbean in November. Brook, who has captained England in an Under-19 World Cup in 2018, was recently Ollie Pope’s deputy in the Test series against Sri Lanka where Ben Stokes was absent.

The ECB has also confirmed that young pacer Josh Hull, who made his international debut in the final Test against Sri Lanka, has been pulled out of the squad following a quad injury. The ODI series kickstarts on September 19 at Trent Bridge.

England squad for Australia ODIs: Harry Brook (Captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, John Turner
